The Smith Law & Shepherds IFA team of advisers
Pete joined the Financial Services Industry in 1982 and has worked in Financial Sales and Financial Sales Management ever since. Pete set up Smith Law & Shepherds in 2006 followed by Smith Law & Shepherds IFA Ltd in 2009. After a long and very successful career, Pete took up the role of Chairman with SLS IFA in late 2018. Pete remains very much a part of the company and still has as much enthusiasm for financial services as he did back in 1982!
Chris Dwyer—Managing Director
Chris is Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA's Managing Director and has been with the company since 2009, Chris has a strong background in business management and is also a level 4 diploma qualified financial adviser. Chris has the overall responsibility for the compliance and governance of the company and is a qualified Pension Transfer Specialist. Away from Financial services Chris is married, has three children, an Everton Season ticket holder, a real ale enthusiast and Caterham Super 7 Driver.
Dan Clough—Operations Director
Dan is Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA's latest appointement to the board as our Operations Director. Dan joined SLS IFA in 2014 and has demonstrated excellent leadership skills and enthusiam to push the business even further forward. Dan has a solid financial services background and is a Pension Transfer Specialist working towards Chartered status. Although very active in the support and development of a number of our advisers, Dan still actively looks after his clients and oversees a lot of new business.
Andrew McMorran—Financial Adviser
Andrew is a fully qualified Financial Adviser with a wealth of experience in helping customers with their Financial needs. Andrew has been advising customers for over 20 years and prides himself in providing outstanding customer service. He can advise in all areas of financial planning including Investments, Mortgages, Pensions as well as Life & Sickness Protection. Whatever your Financial need Andrew is more than happy to help and will provide an initial consultation Free of charge.
Peter Jones—Financial Adviser
Peter Jones has been a Financial Adviser for 15 years and is based in Liverpool, he has built a loyal client base from both Personal and Corporate clients located around the Northwest. Peter provides advice in Retirement planning, Investments, Protection, Mortgages and General Insurance. From qualifying as a Financial Adviser in 1998, Peter joined LloydsTSB and quickly progressed to become a senior Financial Planning Manager looking after two City centre branches in Liverpool. In 2005 he left to work as an Independent Financial Adviser. Qualified to Diploma level, Peter is embracing the opportunity to service his clients needs by holding regular reviews and structuring advice to meet their needs and aspiration. Happily married with 2 children and a lifelong Liverpool supporter.
Paul Jameson—Financial Adviser
Paul is a Diploma Qualified Independent Financial Adviser with over 20 years of experience in Financial Services, having previously worked for companies such as Aviva and HSBC, Paul joined Smith Law & Shepherds in 2009. Paul covers all aspects of Financial Advice with particular emphasis on advice to businesses in relation to Pensions, Protection and Re-Financing. Paul has customers in all areas of the UK and offers all new customer an initial financial review Free of charge. In Paul's spare time he supports Bolton Wanderers FC and plays golf (badly).
Paul Davey—Financial Adviser
Paul joined the Financial Service Industry in 1979 with the CIS, after 5 years he left to join Prudential where he was soon promoted to a Financial Consultants role. In 1992 Paul was head hunted by Lloyds TSB where he became a Savings & Investment Adviser. Paul then left to join Standard Life in1996 where he stayed until the direct sales arm of the business closed. Paul then joined the Cooperative Bank IFA division where he stayed until he opened his own Company. Paul then decided it was time to move to pastures new and in 2012 he joined Smith Law & Shepherds IFA Ltd, Paul is Diploma Qualified and can advise on all aspects of Financial Planning including Mortgages.
Stephen Dwyer—Financial Adviser
Stephen began his career in Financial Services in 1999 with Edward Jones. He moved on to work for major high street banks such as the Birmingham Midshires, Halifax and Santander. Since completing his Diploma (DipPFS) with Royal Bank of Scotland, Stephen decided to further his career and join Smith, Law and Shepherds IFA Ltd in January 2013. Stephen completed his Certificate in Mortgage Advice (Cert CII (MP)) within a month of joining and now advises in all areas of financial planning. Stephen has a wife and 2 children and in his spare time he enjoys playing football, golf, walking and cricket.
Jim Coudis—Financial Adviser
Jim is a qualified Financial Adviser with over 23 years’ experience in the Financial Services industry. Jim takes pride in providing an outstanding service to both existing and new customers. Qualified in the Level 4 Diploma Jim advises in all areas of financial planning including Investments, Pensions, Inheritance Tax , Mortgages and Life & Sickness Protection. Jim is married with 2 grown up children and in his spare time he enjoys dog walking with his Springer Spaniel – MONTY, and most Sports including going to the gym & swimming.
John Turner—Financial Adviser
As a fully qualified independent financial adviser John has been advising clients for over 20 years. He specialises in pensions and investment business from his base in Cheshire with clients spread across the UK. He started his career at the CIS, where he worked his way up to senior management level. John prides himself on delivering outstanding levels of customer service and has an excellent reputation in our industry. We were delighted when John and his company ‘Chambers Wealth Management Ltd’ joined our team. John is highly organised and needs to be with his large practice to help support his Wife and four children. He is dedicated to his work and family and manages an excellent work life balance.
Helen Baister—Financial Adviser
Helen, has had a very long career in the Financial Services, firstly working for two well-known Insurance Companies, before becoming an Independent Financial Adviser over 20 years ago. Helen gives advice in all areas of Financial Planning including: Pensions, Retirement Planning, Investments & Trusts. Helen also specialises in areas of Long Term Care as well as Inheritance Tax Planning. Helen enjoys spending time with her clients and getting to know them both professionally and personally. Helen believes that building a strong client relationship is the best foundation for providing tailored Financial Advice. Outside of work, Helen is a great animal lover and has four cats, all of whom were either strays or rescue cats. Helen would one day love to retire to the coast and set up an animal sanctuary. Helen's other interests are cooking for and entertaining friends at home and also enjoys getting out to see live music as and when she can.

David Sharman—Financial Adviser
David is Diploma Qualified Independent Financial Adviser with over 25 years’ experience in Financial Services. David started his career at Royal London before moving to be an adviser with some of the major high street Banks, Nat West & Lloyds before being made redundant. He joined Smith Law & Shepherds IFA Ltd in 2016.
David provides a high quality customer service to his clients advising on all aspects of Financial Planning including pensions, Investments, Inheritance Tax Planning and Protection.
David is married with one grown up daughter and enjoys being in the countryside at the weekend socialising with family and friends, his hobbies include golfing, fishing and cycling.
Matthew Clements—Mortgage & Protection Adviser
Matthew is the most experienced Mortgage Adviser within Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA submitting over 150 mortgage applications annually for his customers. Matthew became an Appointed Repsresentaive in 2016 now under the trading style of 'Clements & Co' but remains under the Group of Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA Ltd. Starting his career in Financial Services in 2005, Matthew has successfully built a vast customer base in the North West, advising on all aspects of Mortgages, Protection and Equity Release. Matthew is married, has two children and supports Tottenham Hotspur.
John Carey Shields—Mortgage & Protection Adviser
John qualified in 2014 as a Mortgage and Protection Adviser and began his career with Smith Law & Shepherds IFA as a part-time administrator whilst studying for his qualifications and working his previous full-time job at Santander (formerly Alliance & Leicester) bank where he spent 12 years in various roles.
John’s key quality is his meticulous attention to detail and he takes great pride in his work. He has quickly established himself as a well-recognised mortgage specialist within Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA offering ongoing support to his fellow advisers, and has a strong belief in delivering the highest quality service for his clients.
John is married to Jenni and has a daughter Freya, he is a keen supporter of Everton Football Club in his spare time and his hobbies also include cycling and golf. In Summer 2017, John cycled the 127 mile length of the Leeds Liverpool Canal raising money for Claire House Children’s Hospice.
Tom Smith—Mortgage & Protection Adviser
Tom, has spent most of his working life selling cars and motor related finance products. He has recently decided to re-train and become a Mortgage and Insurance Adviser for Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA Ltd after passing all of his industry exams at the end of 2016/early 2017. Tom plans to carry on studying over the next 24 months to become a fully qualified Independent Financial Adviser and will qualify to advise on Pensions and Investments at that time.
Tom, enjoys spending time with his Wife Mel and his one year old son George and enjoys having days out walking in the lakes and teaching his son to swim. When time permits Tom enjoys spending time in the garden and is a Real Ale enthusiast.
Mike Coffey—Protection Adviser
Mike's career started when he was a professional Footballer with Everton football club signing in 1974. In 1982 Mike then signed for Mansfield Town Football club where he stayed until 1984. Commencing a career in financial services with Britannic assurance in 1986 he then went onto leave due to redundancy 2006. In May 2006 Mike joined Friends Provident but left in 2007 and joined Lloyds TSB in 2007 until 2011. Mike then started with SLSFS in 2012 to the present day . Throughout Mikes career in financial services most have been as Financial Adviser or as a Consultant providing advice on Mortgages, Pensions and investments. Today Mike only advises in the Protection Advice area of financial planning as a Protection Adviser with SLS IFA Ltd.
Nel Patel—Protection Adviser
Nel started in Financial Services with Cooperative Insurance, as a Sales Representative, Sales Manager and a District Manager in 1991, he then moved to Shepherds Friendly Society as a Financial Adviser in 2004 where he stayed until 2006. Moving onto Forrester Life as a Financial Adviser in 2006 Nel spent a short time with them until his departure in 2007. Nel joined Lloyds Bank as Financial Adviser in 2007 until joining Smith Law & Shepherds IFA in 2015. Nel is married to Lesley and they have three children Andrew, Hayley and Amelia, His hobbies include Football and Cricket.
Kate Baxter—Agencies, Finance and Business Support
Kate joined the Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA team in 2015 in preparation for the firm going Directly Authorised with the Financial Conduct Authority. Kate is responsible for the set up and maintaining of agencies with providers and lenders, matching up and accounting for all the fees received into Smith, Law & Shepherds IFA as well as arranging adviser payments. Kate also supports the Compliance Manager on a daily basis in an admin role with T&C as well as Compliance and HR.
Gaynor Barrett—PA to Helen Baister
Gaynor knows everything there is to know about providing administrative support in the Financial Services industry. Gaynor has experience of over 30 years, since taking a secretarial course sponsored by NatWest when she left school. Gaynor loves the variety of her work, which includes anything from report writing, managing Helen’s Baister’s busy schedule as her PA to liaising with clients and Financial Service providers. Gaynor believes that that team at Smith, Law & Shepherds offer a reassuring approach to their clients and are willing to help anyone, whatever the nature of their financial problem.
Outside of work, Gaynor is a passionate horse-rider who explores the countryside with her equine companion, Oliver, several times a week. With a life-long love of animals, she would one day like to open an animal sanctuary and provide a home for waifs and strays. Gaynor enjoys spending time with her family, and has her sights set on cruising the German waterways and wine country in style with her husband at some point soon.
Mark Hopkins—Support Administrator to Dan Clough
Mark studied as a chef and achieved his NVQ Levels 1,2 &3 qualifications and was North West college Commis Chef of the year as well as Catering Student of the Year at Hugh Baird College. Mark changed occupation completely in October 2003 and became a Highways Supervisor, again completing his Supervisory NRASWA qualification and IOSH Certificate. In April 2016, Mark joined Smith, Law and Shepherds IFA Ltd initially to help out with administrative duties and has now been given a full time position as a Support Administrator to Dan Clough. Mark started with Smith, Law and Shepherds IFA Ltd with no knowledge of the Financial Services industry, but has progressively gained knowledge under the tutelage of SLS with ambitions to becoming a Para-Planner and possibly an adviser in due course.
Hobbies & Interest : Mark leads a very simple life and enjoys spending time with his Wife Helen, 3 year old daughter Phoebe and his chocolate Labrador, Poppy. Mark enjoys having days out walking the dog and has a membership to the National Trust. When time permits Mark falls back to his training and enjoys cooking at home. Mark has a passion for Liverpool Football Club and is a Real Ale enthusiast.
Bethan Aldred—Directors Business Support & Qualified Mortgage and Protection Adviser
Bethan graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management and has since worked within the Financial Services Industry in numerous roles where she has gained experience of delivering to customer needs. In conjunction with this, Bethan is dedicated to treating customers fairly and providing them with an exceptional high quality service. Bethan has recently began her career with Smith, Law and Shepherds as a Mortgage and Protection Adviser as well as providing Business Support to Chris Dwyer.
Sam Inkson—Mortgage & Protection Adviser
Having worked for many years in a variety of customer service roles, Sam started working in Financial Services with Royal Bank of Scotland. After gaining experience in both Personal & Business banking departments, Sam then stepped into Lending as a Specialist Pre-Sales Mortgage Adviser and gained his Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) qualifications. Sam joined Smith Law & Shepherds IFA in June 2018 as a Mortgage and Protection Adviser and now delivers bespoke mortgage and financial protection solutions to both his personal and corporate clients. Sam is looking forward to becoming a father and has twins due in March 2019. Every other weekend Sam can be found on the Kop hoping and praying that it is finally Liverpool’s “year”.
Wesley Lockley—Financial Adviser
After serving seven years in the Royal Air Force Wesley qualified as a Mortgage and Protection adviser in Financial Services and worked as a paraplanner helping to build and maintain relationships with high net worth clients, fulfilling all the roles and duties of a paraplanner including: Technical Knowledge, Research, Reports and Recommendations, this gave Wesley an excellent opportunity to move into advising customers in his own right. Wesley went on to complete his Level 4 Diploma in Financial Advice (CeMAP & DipFA). Wesley is currently half-way through studying his Investment Management Certificate (IMC) and once completed he will look to study towards obtaining his Chartered Financial Planner status.In Wesley’s spare time he likes to work-out and walk his dog, Wesley can usually be found most Saturday’s in the pub moaning about why Liverpool haven’t won the league. Wesley is also a fan of Single Malt whiskey with MacAllan Sherry cask 12 yr old being his favourite.
